Description This British cartwheel penny was struck in the late 18th century, during the reign of King George III—the tyrant to whom the Founders addressed the Declaration of Independence. On the reverse is Britannia, the symbol of the country. On the obverse is the king’s big head. Not that you can see it. So loathed was mad George III that people regally defaced—literally removed the face of—these coins in a variety of creative ways. This defacement is a physical testament to the contempt the public had for him.
