Description An ancient city on the Black Sea coast of northern Turkey, it was founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 6th century BCE. Re-settled by Athenians it was renamed Peiraeus by their great statesman Pericles and was a member of the Delian league. Part of the Kingdom of Pontus in the 4th century BCE it eventually fell under Roman rule in 71 BCE.
